Outdoor amphitheatre and public open space
Around the new buildings of Civic Place there will be a total of 6000 sqm of open space. It will provide a retreat from the busy CBD, particularly for workers, young people and families. There will be places to sit with friends, for informal outdoor performances, to eat and to relax.
The area will be terraced, accessible and safe. It has been designed to prevent overshadowing so there will be sun even in the middle of winter. The spaces will incorporate trees, comfortable seats and water bubblers. The reflective pool in the library will be visible. In rainy weather covered walkways will provide shelter. Lighting will be installed to increase safety and will use solar energy.
The amphitheatre and the outdoor area will be utilised for special community events such as Australia Day, The Willoughby StreetFair, Harmony Day as well as lunchtime entertainment activities designed to bring music and performances into the open air.
The outdoor areas will also be available for community and corporate hire with ample power and facilities provided.
