Ecological sustainability

The Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD) vision for Civic Place is summarised as follows:


People For Civic Place to reflect the aspirations and identity of Willoughby’s communities; to provide a welcoming place which brings people locally and regionally together by creating a centre of belonging and opportunity through a diverse range of cultural activities.
Economics For the development to incorporate whole of life cycle assessments to benchmark capital cost per square metre and establish an acceptable payback period for initiatives.
Energy For Civic Place to achieve a reduction (compared to an equivalent benchmark development) in the use of energy from sources which are non-renewable or emit greenhouse gases in energy generation or consumption.
Alternative technology For Civic Place to showcase renewable power and alternative energy generation.
Flora and Fauna For the locally occurring indigenous species are enhanced by providing habitat and promoting awareness to encourage community participation in managing their natural environment.
Water Conservation For Civic Place to conserve water, achieve a reduction in demand for potable water from the main supply, and to maximise stormwater harvesting and grey-water reuse.
Air For Civic Place to avoid negative impacts on local and indoor air quality and avoid ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas emission substances.
Construction materials For Civic Place to promote the sustainable use of resources and avoid the use of materials which deplete natural resources or create toxic pollution in their manufacture, use or disposal.
Noise For the Civic Place design to provide the highest acoustic standards consistent with the use of indoor and outdoor areas.
Waste Maximise awareness and participation in waste avoidance initiatives. For the Civic Place design, construction and operation to maximise the use of recycled materials and eliminate waste generation.
Heritage For Civic Place to embody the cultural heritage of Willoughby City.
